Need to send a signed form, receipts or ID documents? With iZip on your iPhone or iPad you can scan paper documents with the camera, save them as a PDF, and put them straight into a ZIP archive. Add a password and they're encrypted with AES-256 before they leave your phone.
What you need: an iPhone or iPad with iZip from the App Store and the documents you want to scan.
Why scan into a ZIP?
- One tidy file. Several multi-page scans travel as a single attachment instead of a pile of images.
- Smaller attachments. Compression helps you stay under email size limits.
- Privacy. With a password, your tax forms, contracts or ID scans are protected by AES-256 encryption while in transit and in the recipient's inbox.
- Opens anywhere. ZIP files open on any Mac, Windows PC, iPhone or Android device.
Scan documents to PDF in a ZIP
- Open iZip and choose to scan a document.
- Allow camera access if asked. iZip only uses the camera while you are scanning.
- Scan your pages. Hold your iPhone over the document. It's detected and captured automatically, or you can tap the shutter button. Repeat for each page.
- Adjust if needed. Tap a page thumbnail to crop it or retake it, then tap Save. Your pages are combined into one PDF.
- Name the archive. Give the ZIP file a name, for example
Rental-application.zip. - Add a password (optional). Turn on encryption and enter a strong password to protect the PDF with AES-256.
- Share or save. Send the ZIP by Mail or Messages, or save it to Files or iCloud Drive.
Tips for clean scans
- Put the document on a dark, flat surface so its edges are easy to detect.
- Use even light and avoid your own shadow falling across the page.
- Hold the phone parallel to the paper rather than at an angle.
- Scan all the pages of one document in a single session so they end up in the same PDF.
Sending the password
If you encrypted the ZIP, don't put the password in the same email as the attachment. Text it or tell the recipient by phone instead. Our secure password guide explains what makes a good password.
The recipient can open the encrypted ZIP with iZip on Mac, Windows or iPhone, or with any up-to-date archiver that supports AES encryption.
Frequently asked questions
Are my scans uploaded anywhere?
No. Scanning, PDF creation and encryption all happen on your device. Files only leave your phone when you choose to share them.
Can I add more files to the ZIP?
Yes, you can add other files from your iPhone, such as photos or existing PDFs, to the same archive before sharing it.
