Optimize & Secure your Mac: iBoostUp (from the makers of iZip)

How to Open RAR Files on iPhone and iPad

RAR files are everywhere, but iPhone and iPad can't open them on their own. With iZip you can open RAR and RAR5 archives straight from Mail, Safari, Messages or the Files app, then preview or extract just the files you need.

What you need: an iPhone or iPad with iZip from the App Store installed, and the .rar file you want to open.

Open a RAR file from the Files app

  1. Find the RAR file. Open the Files app and go to the folder that holds the .rar file, such as Downloads or iCloud Drive.
  2. Share it to iZip. Touch and hold the file, tap Share, then tap iZip. If iZip isn't in the row of apps, swipe to the end and tap More.
  3. Look inside. iZip lists the archive's contents straight away, so there's no need to extract a large RAR just to get at one or two files.
  4. Extract what you need. Tap a file to preview it, or select files and extract them to a folder in Files where other apps can use them.

Open a RAR attachment from Mail or Messages

  1. Tap the .rar attachment to download it.
  2. Tap the Share button and choose iZip.
  3. Browse and extract the contents in iZip.

Open a RAR file downloaded in Safari

  1. Download the file. Tap the download link and confirm. Safari saves it to Downloads in the Files app.
  2. Open the downloads list. Tap the downloads icon in Safari's address bar, then tap the .rar file.
  3. Share to iZip. Tap Share and choose iZip.

Multi-part RAR archives

Big RAR archives are often split into volumes named like file.part1.rar, file.part2.rar or the older file.rar, file.r00, file.r01 style. Save every volume into the same folder in Files, then open the first one with iZip.

Password-protected RAR files

iZip opens fully encrypted RAR archives, including RAR5 archives where the file names are hidden too. You'll be asked for the password before the contents are shown. More tips in how to open password-protected archives on iPhone.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my iPhone open RAR files?

RAR is a proprietary format and iOS doesn't include support for it. The Files app can only expand regular .zip files, so you need an app like iZip.

Does iZip support RAR5?

Yes. iZip opens both older RAR archives and the newer RAR5 format, including encrypted ones.

Can I open RAR files on my Mac or PC too?

Yes, iZip is also free for Mac and Windows PCs. See how to unzip and unrar files on a Mac.
